Ghost Controls Gate Motor Replacement: The Garden Grove Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Ghost Controls-compatible replacement motors for most single and dual swing gate models, with typical installed pricing in Garden Grove running between $450 and $850 depending on the motor series, whether the arm bracket is reusable, and whether we’re replacing one motor or both. Most replacements are completed same-day once the part is matched to your operator. The usual discovery is unglamorous: the gate starts moving slower than it did last month, then one morning it just sits there. The control board clicks, the alarm beeps, but the arm doesn’t move.

What fails first on a Ghost Controls unit is rarely the gearbox. In our experience across Garden Grove driveways, it’s the actuator’s internal limit mechanism or the motor capacitor. Both fail in ways that look identical to a dead motor if you’re not opening the housing. That’s the first thing we check before recommending a full motor replacement, because a $40 capacitor swap is a different invoice than an $800 motor-and-arm job. Name what you found. Name what it costs. Name what you left behind.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls builds its actuators around two main residential lines: the AXDP series (solar-ready, commonly sold in the Ghost Controls kits through box retailers) and the AXS series for heavier single-swing gates. If you installed the gate opener yourself from a big-box kit, you almost certainly have the AXDP. If a contractor supplied it, check the label on the underside of the operator housing: the model stamp reads AXDP-1, AXDP-2, or similar, followed by a voltage note.

The compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Ghost Controls changed the arm mounting geometry between the AXDP and AXS lines, which means an AXS arm will not bolt to an AXDP bracket without a retrofit plate. We keep those plates on the truck. The second gotcha is voltage. Some Garden Grove homes with older low-voltage landscape transformers see voltage sag at the gate, and a 12V Ghost Controls motor that’s been run on 10.8 volts for two years will eat itself from heat. We check line voltage at the arm before quoting the replacement, because putting a new motor on a starving circuit is how you do the same job twice.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Ghost Controls. We use OEM motors when the arm bracket and limit assembly are in good shape, and a quality aftermarket equivalent when the bracket is corroded enough that replacing the whole arm assembly makes more sense than rebuilding it. On the aftermarket side we mostly install Plantraco and NEO equivalents, which match the mounting footprint and torque curve of the AXDP within about 5%, and we’ll tell you which we’re using and why before the work starts.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Ghost Controls Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • The gate moves at half speed, then stops mid-travel. This is usually a failing capacitor or a worn internal limit switch that’s cutting power early. The motor isn’t dead, but it will be if you keep cycling it.
  • You hear a humming from the arm housing but no movement. The capacitor has failed or the gearset has stripped. On the AXDP, the nylon reduction gear is the sacrificial part, and it’s replaceable without a full motor swap in about 60% of cases we see in Garden Grove.
  • The gate opens fine but won’t reverse, or reverses without input. Almost always a limit-switch failure, not a motor failure. The motor may be fine. We quote the test before we quote the part.
  • Water inside the operator housing, or visible rust at the base gasket. Ghost Controls housing gaskets are fair to poor in sustained moisture, and Garden Grove’s marine-layer mornings accelerate it. Once water gets to the motor windings, the motor is done.
  • The arm cycles on its own or trips the breaker repeatedly. This points to a shorted winding in the motor itself. At that point, repair costs exceed replacement, and we’ll show you the math in writing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the pricing range as we quote it in Garden Grove, in dollars, before any work begins:

Scope Typical Installed Price
Single AXDP motor replacement (OEM, arm bracket reused) $450 - $575
Single AXDP motor + new arm assembly (aftermarket) $520 - $680
Dual gate, both motors replaced $820 - $1,100
Motor + control board (common on older Ghost Controls kits) $625 - $850

Every quote includes the part, the labor, the limit-switch calibration, voltage verification at the arm, and a full travel test with a photo log of the settings we left behind. Under Clause 1 of our Haven Standard, that price is written and handed to you before we touch a tool. No surprise invoice, no “well, the bracket was rusted so…” add-on. If the bracket is rusted, we saw it during the quote and priced it.

All completed work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the motor or our installation isn’t right within a year, we come back and make it right. No argument, no fee.

Here’s the honest split. If the gate moves but is slow, you can safely check two things: confirm the gate leaf swings freely by hand (a dragging hinge loads the motor and shortens its life), and confirm the supply wires to the arm show within half a volt of the rated voltage. Those are diagnostic steps, not repairs.

What you should not do is open the operator housing and start swapping capacitors or limit assemblies without knowing the wiring layout. Ghost Controls boards carry a stored charge in the capacitor even with power off, and a wrong wire on a limit switch can send the gate through travel and into anything behind it. That’s the difference between a parts swap and an injury. If you’ve already opened the housing or you’re unsure what you’re looking at, call us at (657) 837-6867. We’ll quote the replacement over the phone, in dollars, and we’ll come out with the right part the first time.
